Sullivan, J. Pitt Point, Alaska → Barrow, Alaska Journal July 15 Cloudy and raining this morning, temperature 55°. Picked up traps in preparation for return flight to Barrow (0830-0930). Called office (ARK) about flight. Return call to let me know if and when the trip will be made. Fields, on his return from the Colville was to pick me up sometime in the afternoon. 1230-1330 picked up reminders of traps and finished packing. Fields arrived at 1730 in cerns 180. Weather still not good - clouds at about 300 ft - then more clouds higher up. Saw a herd of about 35 caribou, 40 mile west of Pitt Point. Arrived at Barrow at 1530. Worked on field notes and unpacked. July 16 Barrow, Alaska Holmer had a brand new sample (no.10) to be sifted through for insects. Tiphulid numbers seem to be down - many have emerged. Entire day was spent in counting insects in these soil samples. July 17 Trip to gull lake is scheduled for today. Fisher is to fly Kalten, Holmer and I in the cerns 180 foot plane. There is an island in this lake on which a colony of glaucous gulls nested last year. Makes and Holmer flew down last year and removed all droppings, animal skulls, etc. This year Holmer and I hope to do the same - getting a year (or nesting season). Weather was not promising, but we took off anyway - Fisher decided we could fly down and see how thick the
