July 12 (cont) Lake west of trap-line 3. They flew up and
circled over as I came near. They returned
and landed in the lake.
After lunch (1230) Luetzow, an employee
at Pow 1, and I checked the Traps. Luetzow,
an immigrant from Germany, wanted to see
a lemming up close. Unfortunately there
were none in the traps. However on the
way back to the station we spotted
a lemming which was seen down - I
grabbed it - an adult ? - gravel?
Mammary not prominent. I decided to
keep the animal - since Mullen was in
need of all the specimens he could get -
and the mark-release program had not
given any results so far. She was
dropped into one of my gloves for the return
to the station. There I established the
lemming in a waste can (fairly roomy) -
and supplied her with: Lab chow, lettuce,
celery, apples, and Toilet paper for a nest.
1515-1630 Looked around in the dry lake
bed a little. Small flocks of pectorals
and large flocks of phalaropes. Took
a r.b.s., a pectoral, and a semipal. s. for
study. Rained a little this afternoon.
