July (not) shot. Caribou weighed between 200 and 300
pounds - they were heavy.
July 11 Clear sunny and hot (76°) today. Insiguitar
active. Checked traps this morning (0830-
0940). Hiked to and around summer water
shual lake - looking for lemmings. A
family of snow bunting were by the
2 warigars at the side of the road leading
to the lake. The juveniles are darker than
the adults, and are not yet accomplished
fliers. Young longspurs are in evidence
on the tundra now - they are also just learning
to fly. Hiked east toward the point after
lunch - once again no lemmings seen. A
few caribou were still around. 1900-2100
moved traps from oil tank area to head
of snap-trap line no. 3, where Mullin and
Chamberlain had some luck with the snap-
traps. 15 traps were placed in runways,
2 traps per stake (1 trap at stake 1.4) along
the 1st 8 stakes.
July 12 Complete cloud cover today; also much cooler
(37°). While checking traps this morning,
I noticed a number of voles - more than the
usual pair. Counted 5 voles in view at one
time. Preying on young birds? or lemmings?
