2 Lemmus trimucronatus John O. Sullivan Barrow, Alaska 1962 9 June (cont.) Frequently, lemmings could be spotted scurrying away from the digging. The results of today's work: 19 lemmings captured - 17 with shovel, 2 in live traps - make me wonder about the effectiveness of our traps. Perhaps a tube-trap that would be placed right in a runway would be more useful. A possibility: [sketches] Even for live-trapping work this type of trap could be placed in runaways within a certain distance of a stale - but then why not place our rectangular traps - back-to-back - in the runaways? 10 June This afternoon McAllen, Piper, Stevens and again heated lemmings in the stream area with shovel. 24 taken: 10 blood samples, 12 for colony, 2 accidental deaths. 11 June 1 ad or in live traps. 13 June 1 ad or Lemmus captured just beyond Beach Ridge near gas line.
