Lemmus trimucronatus. Brown lemming
June 9 June 9, 1961 Barrow - a low in lemming number
at present. M. Brewer + Other had captured over 100
before arrival of Mullen
Mullen +
Chamberlain captured 7 since arrival.
Broch ridge + central marsh - plenty of runways
no lemmings spotted. 1 snowypool + 3 sponerine
preyire hunting around central marsh. also 1
arctic fox.
June 10, 1961 South of ARH. Tundra in thick
with lemming droppings, but no lemmings
seen. An old nest woven of grass + sedge seen.
Also an old can with an nest in it - many
droppings in vicinity. Runways common -
even seen cutting through ice under water.
June 11 South of drum area with Mullen + Holmes looking
for an unusual duck seen by Mullen. I
spotted a lemming running through
the sedge, then swimming in shallow
water. I grabbed the animal and gave it
to Mullen. It was a pregnant 9.
June 12 Barrow, Alaska. w/ Chamberlain on beach ridge - caught
one Lemmus - running through grass. Given to
Mullen. PM - while setting snap traps - found 3 dead
Lemmus in old traps. Additional dead L. near tran line.
