Sullivan, J 1961 Calcarius lapponicus Lapland Longspur Barrow, Alaska June 9 Barrow. pair mottled over tundra. o? displaying, flying + singing. The ? bird has black and chestnut on the crown and neck. June 10 w/ Holmer. nest south of ARL. 5 eggs. marked nest w/ stake 3' to E. Parent birds came close (6ft) running about or ground. Citron gives no. of eggs as 4-7 - clutch could be complete. June 13 2 o? lapponicus in snap traps. June 19 approached longspur nest in Voth Area. The ? was on the nest - frozen in an odd attitude. She flew off at closer approach (5yds). It is possible that the head was raised in order to get a better look at me. June 21 Observed a o? and a ? longspur feeding close to one another this morning. Soon another o? flew up and landed near the ?. The mate flew between the new o? and the ?, and the new o? retreated. This was repeated 3 times. Finally the mate o? appeared to throw his chest out and run at the other o? on the ground. The latter took flight and was pursued in the air for about 10 yards. Then the ? returned to her ?. July 5 Young longspur - flightless but out of the nest are now in evidence on the tundra.
