1962 Barrow, Alaska
12 June (cont.)
Stercorarius pomarinus
Cries: Eeengh Eeengh -
Low Crouch
THREATENING ATTITUDES Stretched High
A 4th jaeger (possibly paired with no.3) arrived
on the scene. There 2 newcomers (I think)
threatened the melanistic bird. The other
jaeger (of the melanistic pair) looked on. After
less than a minute of threat, all 4 took
wing. Soon split into pairs - and landed
apart. One jaeger returned to the site when
the remnining had been eaten.
Jaegers also seen at: Beach Ridge (1);
central March (1), bottom of B. Ridge toward
March (1).

Pomarines commonly seen on the way to
Ikbowick today. Some flying over tundra -
apparently hunting. Some settling backed
up on moorcole.
2100. Nina and I watched 6 pomarines
picking at a white elongate object (which
turned out to be a stick bone).
