June 9 p.r. plumage - rusty-red back, black belly patch.
w/ Holmer in vicinity of central marsh -
a number of alpina.
June 10 Holmer shot a & alpina
made specimen
Brood patch just beginning
June 12 While checking snap traps.
Watched
an alpina feeding, then bathing and preening
in a small pond. Probed deeply with bill to feed.
Placed head in water and splashed water over
its back while bathing. Preening - did a lot of
probing in its breast w/ bill. S c a t c h e d itself
w/ left left twice. Flew up about a foot and
ruffled its feathers on alighting after completing
bath.
June 14 1945 or flight display + song. He ascended to
about 100 ft, there hovered his wings and
sang, "Kraw Kraw Kraw". This lasted
for some 20 seconds.
June 18 0900 - A red-backed s. was caught in a snap trap in
line III B. I shot another 200 yards SW of the
receiver sight. A 3rd alpina was shot at 1910
in the Voth Area.
June 24 Took 5 specimens this morning in the area between
