Barrow, Alaska
June 9 With Holmes at central marsh - saw the
Pectoralis and heard song: "oop oop oop"
Markings: heavy breast streaking - ends abruptly
against white belly.
June 11 Walking just to west of central marsh -
heard the oop oop song. Saw the pectoralis.
W/ air sacs much inflated flying along
calling. At least 3 different
birds called in this particular
area. Also heard call
later in afternoon (4:30) south of the
drum area.
June 17 While Holmes and I were setting out trapline III A + III B
north of Vothi Area, a pectoral displayed and sang
very close to us. There are unusual semaphore - then
one stood still for intervals and then would
inflate its chest and fly low "oop ooping".
The bird continued this throughout the trap
setting time (1530-1630).
June 18 1530 - While checking trapline III B, I saw a o
pectoral standing on an elevated clump of
tundra just south of the trapline. His chest
appeared partially inflated. The bird permitted
close approach, and it turned out that his right
