Polysticta stelleri St. Eider
June 10 A group of 12 birds: 6♂, 6♀. south of ARH
Toward village. Swimming in water.
Round black spot on side of breast of ♂.
Underparts - Buffy.
June 11 6 birds - 3♂, 3♀. Walking Toward central
March from the west, I saw the eiders
sleeping. As I neared them (150 yds) they
became alert. Waddled into a pool away
from me. I squatted and observed after
approaching to within 100 yds. All except
1♂ began bathing feverishly (displacement?).
All birds made flight intention movements -
race on tail - flapped wings a few times -
settled back in water. After 5 minutes
They flew off. a ♀ in the lead.
June 15 While inspecting trap lines on beach ridge
(0800-0830) I happened to see 2 pairs of
stelleri take flight from a small pond.
They flew about 150 yards north and
alighted in another pond. Some 10 minutes
later as I neared the birds, I scared up
3 more stelleri (2♀, 1♂). These flew past the
other 4 which also got up, and the 7 flew
up, circled to the west flying low (10ft)
