Sullivan, J. 1962 23 june Wamwright, Alaska Saw a pair of red-throats in a pond about 3/4 of a mile from the inlet. One of them stretched out and lay very low in the water, partially screened by Aristophylla when it saw me. The 2nd loon kept looking around — behind the 1st bird. I crouched down and watched for 10 minutes or so. after awhile the 2 birds swam out into the open part of the pond (out of the grass). They floated quite close to each other (12") but kept "nervously" raising their necks and looking in my direction — first with one eye then the other. After a few minutes, one of them gave a "croaking" call — a single call — and both flew off passing about 15 yards from me.
