Studied in Northern Alaska: The 1955 Program
Arctic Inst. of N. Am. After eve. meal checked
snap traps: one lemming - IX 5.8.
June 14 0800-0945 Sacked live traps. No lemmings
captured. Set out 25 more live traps
above in high polygon area farther out
along gas line.
After lunch put up a longspur and a
Red-backed sandpiper. Fed the carcasses to the
wolverine in the west cage.
1800-2035 Checked snap and live traps - no
lemmings captured.
June 15 0745-1000 checked snap & live traps. 15-20 mph
wind was blowing this morning. Fog
obscured the sky. Mullen mentioned that
an eskimo had brought in a bird - a short-eared
owl. It had lain around for some time and
was now in the freezer. I put the owl up after
lunch. Sex was not determined, the gonads
were not identifiable. Checked live traps at 1500.
