49 Journal Sullivan J. Wainwright → Barrow, Alaska 6 August (cont) assistant arrived in 04 E. Oil collected with a sweep net for about 30 minutes. Passed over from 1-2,000 caribou on the way to Barrow. Also: 7 snowy owls, 3 jaegers (qr?), hundred of glaucous gulls, 3 walrus on the beach (dead-gull feeding on them). ±6 dead seals on the beach. We were advised about 5 minutes past 12 C that Barrow was socked in, circling. O. Murphy flew solidly onward. Traffic was in the Barrow area: Wien Alaska F-27 and a Beechcraft — both of these gave up — one flew on to Unalakleet, the other back to Fairbanks. Murphy followed the coast line at about 25 feet — and set us down nicely on the runway — which had been just visible from the coast. Set out lines I and II this afternoon, lines IX and X after supper. 7 August Barrow, Alaska Set live traps this morning, no signs of increased activity. Clipped grass and placed it in traps. Checked lines I, II, IX and X. Plan to move lines VIII + VIII in Central Marsh — Because of trampling effect of Lemming Trappers. Tundra worn down along these lines, and water
