47 Journal Sallivan 19. 1862 Wainwright, Alaska 2 August (not) member of time - trying to circle us. Stayed under for varying length of time - 5-15 seconds (approximately). Around 2300 we went back to camp. Sunset for the first time this summer. 3 August Wainwright, Alaska 43 Lemmings and 1 Dicroctonyx in the line this morning! A real haul - I checked the traps, while Stevens hunted for Dicroctonyx - with no luck. Mullen would like some for comparative purposes in the lab. Day was hot - mosquitoes murderous. During leach Staley (a new pilot) arrived - with Rick Ashley (insect collector - Bokanakikew). Stevens returned to Barrow with them - Taking specimens along. More Lemmings in traps this evening - also set out 2 live traps for Dicroctonyx. 4 August Wainwright, Alaska Billy Patkotak, eskimo employed at the Dewhine Station, reports 3 juvenile snow outs were captured by Wainwright eskimo children - one was left for the parents (pawlets). Thus enough lemmings to support owl breeding in the vicinity of Wainwright Village. Billy is a reliable observer - can pick the familiar birds out of Peterson guide (most of them).
