31 July (ant.) with the bare hand by gripping the skin between
the scapulae, a fox required the use of a leather
mitten - and would bite anything. Another
method was to place the coffee can in the cage
and herd the lemming into it (the more
efficient method, it seemed).
Weather cold, overcast some rain today.
1 August Barrow, Alaska
Still awaiting flight to Wainwright. Worked
on progress report for Gelly. "Bluebird" weather
today. Wainwright trip again put off. Worked
on pt. sampling graphs. Flight may occur
after supper - stand by.
2 August Barrow, Alaska --> Wainwright, Alaska
Checked with the office concerning Wainwright
this morning. Wainwright flight should be
leaving at any moment. Steven to go along
to learn trap line location, and to help set
traps. 10:20 Murphy, Steven, and I moved
to Wain. Stevens and I set out the lines
right after lunch. Stunted hot dog - marguiter
were abundant. 3 Pomarine, 2 Long-tailed
plovers and 3 snowy owls were seen.
After supper Steven and I went out to
hunt for Dicrostonyx. Saw what I
think was a juvenile red-throated loon in a
tundra pond. It went under and surfaced a
