Journal Sullivan J. 1962 Barrow, Alaska flying. The second trip to Wainwright is scheduled for tomorrow. We hope to get the outcamp run before starting the third running of the Barrow liner. 30 July Barrow, Alaska Brewer has to make up for lost flying time today. Two flights to Anaktuvuk Base will be run today - and Wainwright tomorrow (we hope). Worked on pt. sampling graphs in lab. 31 July Barrow, Alaska Awaiting flight to Wainwright. Helped Bary in the colony this morning. Procedure: remove, weigh + record all food remaining in each lemming cage; subtract from food given the day before, thus getting food use per day. Same with water (measured). Weigh lemmings (every 4th da. - this is a weighing day). Easiest weighing method - balance 2 coffee cans (2 lb cans) on scale. Damp lemmings in can - most lem- mings can't get out. In weighing litter - smaller pups are weighed together (litter wt). Pups post toe-clipping + marking are weighed individually. Litter seem to run around 9 pups. Individual temperaments of adult lemmings can be observed. Stevens handled a few easily (no bite), most could be picked up
