1962 Cape Simpson, Alaska
10 July (cont). Boiling in the traps this morning. About 20 old
spaw in the lake next to (SE of) the site.
Saw an all gray bird this afternoon with
some black trimmings. Ran back to
Station - picked up shotgun - Found the
bird again - collected it. Looks like an
immature snow brenting that had gotten
coated with coal dust - brought it back
to Barrow. Traps in late this afternoon
and this evening.
11 July Cape Simpson -> Barrow, Alaska
Still cold and overcast. Sea fog
drifts in then it clears for 15 minutes,
then you can't see over 50 ft again. Dave
will be here today for return to Barrow.
Murphy arrived in 06 Ehs at 2330 this
evening - back to Barrow sometime
after 2300. Visibility extremely poor on
this flight - just caught glimpses of
sea ice and dark tundra. Ted Humphrey
drove me to camp - in conversation I observed
that Ted was going to get John Hines
for Murphy's final trip of the evening -
to Cape Simpson (they didn't know Dave
was to show Hines the trap line location, etc.).
Hines was probably in bed anyhow - so the
traps were set for tomorrow 1st thing - with
