Journal Sullivan, J. 1962 Barrow, Alaska 17 June (cont) Weather cleared while we were on the census plat - still cool but sunny and pleasant. On the return trip, we stuck the weasel out in footprint like near the gas well. We were next to the "road" which was under about 2ft of water, and the weasel sat at an angle- one track up on the road, the other (the left) stuck deep in snow and water below. Kolmer and I gathered our specimens, brineal, shotguns, etc. and began the long trek back to camp (after failing to dislodge the weasel). Within 10 minutes a walrus-mustached individual drove up in a weasel on his way to the gas well. We got a rope from the gas well and he made preparations to tow us out. Kolmer got in and put the weasel in reverse - I noticed that it backed out before the line became taught. The snow that had jammed the left track must have melted thus freeing the track ... something to keep in mind if you're stuck in such a situation. We made it back for supper. 2145-2300 - checked snap traps and live traps.
