Journal Sullivan, J. 1962 Barrow, Alaska 12 june (cont). Much snow melt is causing recirculation of water to run all over the tundra (toward ponds, sloughs, etc.). Pieper's plot still largely under snow (including trap lines XII + XIV). Walking-difficult, you break through 3-6 inches of crust into 1-3 ft. of water below. A few (very few) bare spots in evidence. Pieper reported this entire area free of snow (mostly) last year on 16 june. The season lags. Birds seen this morning: snowy owl, pomarine jaeger, glaucous gull, red phalarope, 2-3 sandpipers, Baird's, portland 2., golden plover, snow bunting, junco. This afternoon White, Pieper, Stevens and I checked trap line IV + VI for remains of lemming carcasses from last year - or for cats. Most of the lines are still under snow. No carcass found - but some fox scat + owl pellets. Next (1530-1630) set snaptrap lines I+II on Dale Line Ridge. Majority of the stakes are free of snow (7 remain under). Runways and some tracks (on snow) in evidence. Also checked live traps (each ridge) - one adult lemming captured - marked and released. White to check the live traps at 2230, I check at 0400.
