Sullivan, J.
1962 Barrow, Alaska
11 June Heiner and I worked on snap-traps this morning:
checking them for operational condition and baiting them. We also drove to Barkline
Ridge and Beach Ridge + Central March -
looking at snow conditions at trap line I, II,
V, VI, VII and VIII. Lines V, VI, VII + VIII
still have plenty of snow. I + II are
more clear - quite likely to be the first
lines open.
Worked on traps this afternoon: baited, oiled
and put in working order. 1530-1700 Heiner
and I set live traps (20 - 5 rows of 4 traps
each) where Beach Ridge joins the pipeline.
There was a dead lemming in a mound near
the trap sight. Snow is receding in this polygon
area exposing more and more stakes.
2100-2320 checked live traps - no lemmings.
Captured 1 Lemming alive not far from trap area.
12 June Weasel shortage impedes operations somewhat.
Piiper going to his fertiliser plot - so Heiner
and I went along - checked live traps on
the way. (no catch).
Day partly overcast - some sunshine,
colder than yesterday. Tundra is in
very bad shape for weasel traffic or foot.
Decided to go around Woklucking rather
than risk going through.
