Journal John O. Sullivan 1962 Barrow, Alaska 9 june (cont.) After supper, Stevens and I went back out to the same spot in the drum area. Between 17:16 and 2100 we captured 7 more via shovel - 2 were in live traps which we had set during the afternoon's hunt. - a total of 19 lemmings today! The 8 snowy owl was there (with another lemming) - but no display. 10 june - Barrow, Alaska Drove out to Darkine ridge with Steven this morning. Still some snow around trapline I + II. Afternoon: Mullen, Piper, Stevens and I Turned over snow with shovels in thickium area. Lemmings were somewhat plentiful. 10 were taken for blood samples (Mullen). 12 Taken alive for the animal colony, and 2 were accidentally killed in capture. 24 total. (43 in the last 2 days - captured in their way. The sun was particularly warm today; the snow in getting quite soft. Trickles of water are running toward pools and sloughs. Many areas under the snow are quite wet. Lemmings seemed to be forced to the ridge where it is a little dryer under the snow.
