Journal John O. Sullivan 1962 Barrow, Alaska 4 June. for biting. Some combination of broken traps will make one functional. 7 4 June. While erecting live traps in drum area, saw 2 snowy owls (a pair). I gave "Dracula" display with lemming in beak. ♂ (standing on mound) was joined by ♀ ♀ had flown to mound with a slow moth- like flight - wings moving very slowly, held quite high. ♂ took lemming - fleet 25 yards towards receiver site - and proceeded to eat the lemming. Mullen, Paper, Steven and I watched from the weasel (about 100 yards away). The pair was together on the mound for about 5 minutes, then the ♂ flew off and ate the lemming - after another 6 or 7 minutes, she flew a little farther off - again toward the receiver site (1545). This occurred from about 1530-1545. Proceeded to walk along the edge of the snow and to turn over chunks of snow (2 of us had shovels). Cade and Maher had some success in this way earlier. Every now and then we uncovered a lemming. 10 were captured by about 1700 (a field day for mullen). Conditions were excellent for this sort of hunt: clear sky, sunny and warm (±40°). The snow was soft and "easy" to turn over.
