Barrow, Alaska
8 June (coat) personnel who wished to operate
weasels this summer. A rack of broken
tracks (15 in the last week or so) was the
cause of the meeting. Brewer itemized
costs of equipment and operation which
totaled $4/mile. A broken track costs
$800 and no more tracks are being produced.
Weasels are no longer being made - Barrow
is to be the "graveyard" of the weasel (Brewer).
Information on proper driving and other
cautionary advice was given. Comments
later were to the effect that the talk was
useful and would benefit weasels and
their investigators. Mullen suggested a
repeat performance to Brewer when
the rest of the summer workers arrive.
at 1700 it was quite sunny and
fairly warm. The ice over the ocean looked
very white.
Lemmings seem to be scarce at present.
Mullen has 4 animals in the colony. The
skimors captured over 100 near the village last
year about this time. This year none have
been taken there - though Pete Sovalih was
asked and has some skimor children looking.
9 June - Worked over traps this morning, also got
some bacon fat and peanut butter from me
