Barrow, Alaska (Cape Simpson)
central area seems to be a depression.
August 20 Foggy again today. A couple of snowy owls
around. One perches on the tall stake of the
trap lines. Also one dead juvenile owl -
men at site say the dog (husky) killed it.
3 lemmings in traps today. Made evening
chick early (1500-1700) to avoid dark + fog together.
August 21 Captured 2 more lemmings today. Wincy
+ cool today - autumn-like. Brought in lines
I + II this evening.
August 22 0830-1000 brought in lines III + IV this
morning. Awaited return flight to Barrow.
August 23 Another autumn day. Wincy with a little
snow falling. On standby for return to
Barrow.
August 24 Fields in area 180 m a return flight stopped
at Simpson to pick me up. Poor weather on
return flight. Saw some caribou. Barrow itself
was fairly well covered by fog.
August 25 Set out trap lines V + VI, III + VIII today. In
remaining time - should set out explorers
and take pin-drop samples. Holme will
help in setting out explorers.
August 26 Checked traps this morning - nothing. Holme
and I put out explorers in both area -
Duponitia, Eriophorum, Carex-Duponitia
Types. 1800-1900 checked traps.
