Sullivan's. Barrow, Alaska Journal August 17 Flight to Cape Simpson today. Joe Felder flew Mullen Piper and I in the 180. (Piper was to go on to Pitt It. to collect plant + soil samples. Mullen to be picked up on the return trip - and I would remain for the trapping). Bright, sunny day - we arrived in time for lunch. Mullen and Felder flew out and dropped the stakes so we wouldn't have to carry them out. After lunch Mullen and I went out and looked for the stakes - which proved difficult to find. We were working on the second line when the plane returned and Mullen had to go back. Felder, Mullen, Piper flew over the stakes that, as yet, had not been located - marking them for me (I remained out to spot the marker). - Mullen dropped a note reporting fog + rain coming from the east - so I moved the stakes closer to the site (from about 2½ mi. to about 1½ mi). Set them tomorrow. August 18 Finished laying out trap lines this morning - sunny weather. 1400-1600 set out traps on lines I + II. 1830-2030 traps out on III + IV. August 19 0830-1030 checked traps. Captured 6 lemmings. Checked traps again 1830-2030 - Longipers. Some fog today - area appears quite regular in fog - hard to pick out landmarks - although the Cape is a fairly narrow point.
