In this [illegible] county in the fifties Mr. Johnson & Pete J Laramie came across a herd of a hundred or so Elk. The former on this tree cried one if he had had the assistance of the latter, the entire herd could have been captured. As it was one old beast who could not run as fast as the others shared fifty which made the horse man drop a little anorth that the herd should all avoid the trap. It rained again hard in the afternoon. Aug 17 Thursday. Camp XIII Looked around among the granitic rocks but found nothing of value besides a few specimens of specular iron in quartz. Then collected flowers for the balance of the day. Found an orchid. The hills about here are in places almost im- passable for fallen timber. A forest fire was here some year ago and now the young timber is starting again particularly quaking aspen an cottonwood. Rained again in the evening,
