Rodman Bay, Alaska, Aug. 12 to 20 1907. MAMMALS. Odocoileus columbianus sitkensis.. Sitka Deer. Common. Peromyscus sitkensis. Sitka White footed Mouse. Common. Microtus sitkensis. Sitka Meadow Mouse. Common in grass patches along the beach in a few places. Had the habit of burrowing and carrying earth out to the entrance of the burrows, which were in light loamy soil. They covered some traps with earth freshly brought out. I have noticed this burrowing habit elsewhere only at Idaho Inlet, Chichagoff Island. Ursus sp.? Bears were not as common as we had expected to find them. The caretaker told us that he had killed seven from the railroad track last fall, and that altogether sixteen bears had been killed here within a year this naturally leaves few in this region. Hasselborg killed a male about three years old. He was in fine condition, though without underfur. His skull seems to differ from those we have killed elsewhere, but this may only be the result of immaturity. Sorex sp.? A small shrew is common. I found several in traps partly eaten, some being only skins when found. I suppose that they were eaten by other shrews, though possibly Peromyscus may have done it.
