attention to us sitting within the open door, I set up my camera five feet from the sail and while focusing on the place when the boat lay a Jay came and fed, and a few minutes later one came while I stood beside the camera and snapped him. The day was cloudy and probably the plate was undexposed. A pair of Sharp-shinned Hawks are around, and chase the Jays some, but I think have caught none yet. They chase them in a half-hearted way as if the Jay was able to meet them. The Jays are not afraid of the Hawks. I have not been able to get a shot at the Hawks yet. Aug Sept. 3, Mr. Strassell killed a porcupine yesterday. He shot it through the lower jaw with rifle, breaking the lower part of the skull badly. This animal weighed 18½ lbs. - mammal 3/3, measurements are 715-213-90-25. The front pair of mammal contained milk. The nipples showed signs of use, but apparently not very recent. The stomach contained a mass of finely masticated food, mostly green, probably
