males. At daybreak all the grouse in the country seem to begin shooting, and at camp it sounds almost like a barnyard from the frequency of the notes. I am unable to locate a bird in a tree by its shooting, as I am deaf in one ear, and cannot be sure of the direction of its sound, which has a contritonal quality. A male red-backed hummingbird came around this afternoon. He seemed hungry and was looking for flowers. Apparently red was his favorite color, as he investigated everything red about camp, such as a red bordured towel, the red lines on the lithographed end of a camel fruit case, an empty salmon can, and particularly a red bandana handkerchief hanging on a brush. This he went to three times. He came within arms reach of me several times. His gorget was very brilliant.
