"Bird near N.6—line Grass. Here white oaks are yet in green leaf, At Roanoke all the hardwood trees are tulip or lining, but none of these are so. Beeches are shedding from top down on inner branches last. Think the leaves of tobacco have been stripped. Some is yet in bloom. Cotton here is very light. Have seen no pick- ing. I go here myself at the night.
