Calidris bairdii
At Kasook, Meade River, North Slope Borough, Alaska
30 May
Dave Shuford + Stuart Johnston found 1st bairdii by Atkasook village this afternoon.
During the evening I walked them + also saw one, foraging amidst alpine on a
sandy knoll. No hint of display.
31 May
Single bairdii still present at Atkasook.
Barrow, Alaska
10+ bairdii by road system around NAW, most on the south side of the road between the
NAW airport and POWMAIN. Some aerial chasing + vocal display. 2130 one on Grin 1,
foraging and gave one flight display.
3 June
bairdii still only by road system.
5 June
bairdii actively displaying on Baseline Ridge. 2 pairs seen - one on T6 (and
probably later across the slough) with 8+9 feeding quickly together. The other
on T7 in the middle of 6E104. 8 displaying to 9 in this pair - tail up,
wing up + down, then 9 approaching. 8 entering nest cup. 9 + quickly
exiting. 9 entering + as 8 displayed inside (tail up, wing up / down)
9 worked on nest cup.
6 June
obtained additional tape of bairdii, although not 1st rate quality. Most all of a 8 some
50-60 m up in the air hovering + gliding continuously, alternating between frog
call and continuous wattle. See tape log (1978-3).
