JPMeyes 1979 Journal NARL, Barrow, Alaska 23 June (cont'd) Phalaropus fulicarius lobatus - more common than I have ever seen it here. While not approaching the abundance of the regular shorebirds, we see it every day, localised, obviously meeting throughout the area. 3-5 pairs use the Grid 1,2 area. At least 1-2 pairs are out by Grid 4. WATERFOWL - Gravia acutica - a pair is on S. Meadow Lake, as usual. Cairina stellata - they are here, cackling over the area. I was surprised however, that they arrived so late as they did given how early their ponds thawed. Anas acuta - small numbers breeding throughout. 1-2 in each area Grids 1 and 2. Polysticta stelleri - down, but present. 1 pair may nest on Grid 1. dillho for Grid 2. That compares with 7 from Grid 2 in 1976. Somateria spectabilis - a few breeding locally. As of June 21, we have begun seeing B' flights to nest Somateria fischeri - around hot secca. See phenology Clangula hyemalis - very few breeding locally. None on Grid 1. Phrygana (??) are non breeders in the slough, but few. Lemmings + Predators - Lemmus trimucronatus I see ~1 lemming/day in the field. Cutting in a few, very few, places is many. Almost no winter units. Almost no windrows of shorn grass along drainages. Ovso flammeus - nada Nyctea scandiaca - a few moving through. We see one every 3-5 days. They do not remain
