EXPOSURES ON LOC. 271 - N-S bluffs west of old meander scar W side of Firesteel Creek in NW cor, SW 1/4, NW 1/4, sec. 28, and NE cor., SE 1/4, NE 1/4, sec. 29, T19 N., R.23E, Black Horse SE quadrangle, Cowson Co., So. Dkt. Following is adapted from Reiskind notes. Section 1. South end of the exposure, measuring up from top of a soft greyish tan sand that presumably marks top of Timber Lake. ① 25.3 "Banded beds". 1/4 to 1/2 " beds of shale, silt, + fine to med. grained sand; colours range from dk grey to tan + brown. Shale and silt predominant. (note presence of the dark grey silty shale + shale layers here) ② 3.9 Thinly interbedded dark grey silty shale with some rusty sand laminated, and tan sand with limonitic laminated, shale and sand layers 1 to 2 inches thick, ③ 4.6 Sand, tan, with limonitic sand beds, bedded, 3 to 8" thick; finer 1/2" layering indicated on weathered surfaces. ④ 6.2 Sand, greyish-tan, appears massive; no evident bedding, may be thinly laminated. ⑤ 1.9 "Banded beds", up to 1" thick, dk grey to limonitic stained. ⑥ 3.0-?
