Feb. 20, Nuliofik Open water on south & north side and west end of this island. Cooki continues by sledge; have sent Byak on trav to village to report it beyond; hoping to transfer sledges by uniaak to solid ice. Today is very windy and so much snow is melting, Feb 21st Wind lost night. Foot out remaining ice. Is cold now and snowy & blowing. Byak man could not get back yesterday. Cracker of sugar gone, am living on seed order to hope for better weather soon and either sledging or boating. The three in school house as villages are crowded and very dirty. No store at this or the next place, Feb 22 Byak men back today; ice not good. New ice forming today and expect solid in two days more. Food scarce
