JPM Myers 1496 Journal 5 NARL, BARROW, AK 4 June Chukchi FRESH LAKE MIDDLE SALT LAGOON S. MEADOW LAKE N. MEADOW LAKE GRID 3 GRID 2 CREEK 1 C. LINE RIDGE SCALE- Transsects are 1 Km. long LOCATION OF 1975 (1-5) and 1976 (6-10) transsects 2 fox dens marked X OWI nests △ Greenberg and I finished laying transsects 6-10 this a.m. As last year, each is 1 Km long, defined by a central row of stakes placed at 50 m intervals. Each stake defines 2 units, (n)a) and (n)b) — i.e. a 50 x 90 m unit lying on either side of the stake. The morning was remarkably calm — a balmy day until for this season, with temperature rising to the mid 30's. Slushy snow conditions, worsening as the morning progressed, made walking unpleasant. We discovered a heavy concentration of Stercorarius p. in the vicinity of transsects 8/9 (near their junction). Also, along 10 we were hosted by an arctic fox; perhaps the same one which has a den by the origin of Tran #6.
