lead which is only 50 yds wide. It is freezing over and should be all right - in the morning. I have covered about- 12 miles today making a total of 25 miles from land. Sunday, April 19th 5 th - 40 th day Crossed over on the thin ice this morning at 10-30. Lead widened during night but froze over above the igloo. at 12-30 encountered another lead, at 2-45 another, at 3-30 and at 4. Ice buckled under us at all, at last- lead ice came together and arose beneath our feet with so loud a noise that I could scarcely hear the crunches - I was Edhuria's yelled for Fitz - to hurry. As he came along over crawling was completely crumbled up to creased in another place. Part- two dug down in Fergus creek but Edhurion filled them out. 18 below, 40 miles from land.
