It was blowing a bit
from the north when we
left this morning but I
decided not strong enough
to give us much discomfort
at -20 below zero although
it was right in our face.
My faces were in an
awful mess, a frozen
tangle of blood and hard
window-cord. The other
two men got away but
only after I dogs had their
usual morning rush and
raid upon our igloo. I
fearing I would freeze my
feet sat down on the ice
with back to the wind and
proceeded to patiently pick
out one trace after the
other with freezing fingers.
In about an hour I
had everything clear when
away went my dogs, for the
remains of that caravan.
Finally I got straightened
out again and started.
It was drifting so badly
