JP Myers 1975 Journal Grid 3, 3 Km S of NARL on Gasoline Rd, Pt. Barrow, Alaska 2 July Censused Grid 3, beginning 0720. weather calm, with decreasing cloud cover until mid-morning, by which time clouds had cleared. Results (birds landed on grid) Shorebird Phruidia dominica 2-3 prs C. alpina 6 pairs C. melanotos 9-10♂ w/territoria 12♀ C. posita 2pr Phalaropus fulicarius ♂ 7 ♀ 17 Artemia interpres 6 (3 pr) Linnnodromus scolopaceus 1 After completing the census (1020), I followed a ♂ melanotos. See tracking data. Returned to base 1200. Afternoon worked on notes (Actual TRANSFER 4, Grid 2, 4 km S of NARL, Pt. Barrow) 3 July 0640 began sampling transect 4 - heavy clouds, intermittent showers, westerly wind. I was surprised by the quiet of the tundra today at this hour C. alpinn 2 * C. melanotos ♂ 14 [2] ♀ 2 Linnnodromus scolo. 1 Phalaropus fulicarius ♂ 4 [16] ♀ 4 Phalaropus lobatus [2] Of interest is that the ♂ pectoral ♂ are increasingly appearing in flocks, a trend which was first noted in the aborted sample of #2 on 6/29. Thus, if we calculate the mean # of individuals / individual in each unit and divide that by the mean density over the whole transect, this ratio approaches 2x (=1.79). From 0830 till 1245 I censused Grid 3. C. melanotos still displaying somewhat. totals: ♂ melanotos 10 ♀ melanotos 9
