(Actual TRANSFER 4, Grid 2, 4 km S of NARL, Pt. Barrow)
3 July
0640 began sampling transect 4 - heavy clouds, intermittent showers, westerly wind.
I was surprised by the quiet of the tundra today at this hour
C. alpinn 2 *
C. melanotos ♂ 14 [2]
♀ 2
Linnnodromus scolo. 1
Phalaropus fulicarius ♂ 4 [16]
♀ 4
Phalaropus lobatus [2]
Of interest is that the ♂ pectoral ♂ are increasingly appearing in flocks, a trend which
was first noted in the aborted sample of #2 on 6/29. Thus, if we calculate the mean
# of individuals / individual in each unit and divide that by the mean density over the whole
transect, this ratio approaches 2x (=1.79).
From 0830 till 1245 I censused Grid 3. C. melanotos still displaying somewhat.
totals: ♂ melanotos 10
♀ melanotos 9
