Calidris ruficollis
Nuwak Pt. Barrow, Alaska
23 July
found 3 C. ruficollis chicks near site of nest, if adult present, sex unknown. brooding chick-
which hatched on 20 or 21 July. Detected it by striking call unlike other local calidridines,
a two note whistle chur-rop., repeated rapidly in flight. Also gives pusilla like alarm note-
which when compared to pusilla lacks some of the viciousness of the pusilla note. Flight very distinctive-
it gives bursts of fluttering as it evades an alarm. During breeding season this is not uncommon
for pusilla, but I've not seen it recently. The ruficollis does so circumspectly, chur-roping
all the while.
3 August
saw one chick this evening, plus the adult, which appears to be swatting its rufous neck.
The adult is still incredibly adamant about human intruders. Its pod has been invaded by
flocks of pusilla, but the ruficollis does not appear to be aggressing.
