SP Nyerg 1975 Journal Transsect 135 29 August (cont'd) this before, I expect that the end is near, with massive emigration already occurring. GRID 2/3 30 August 0800 measured (Q,O) total of Grid 3, with aid of Russell G., then 0840 began censusing Grid 2. Temperature low -30° when I began, 32 at 1200. ice covered all but small areas on the larger ponds. Considerable snow/ice accumulation, and a solid crust in the tundra. Wind grew in strength out of E and unpleasant. Fog accumulated with low clouds prevailing. Obvious that above the surface layer there was nothing. And nothing is almost the appropriate name for declining bird densities: GRID 2 3 alpina 5 0 3 1 melanotos 0 0 8 0 limnodromus 0 0 Phalaropus fulicarius 0 0 Grid 3 was essentially bare, the only bird present being a juvenile stellula. #2 still had a contingent of alpina, as well as melanotos + fulicarius juveniles. But the census of both grids was apparently - dramatically even since yesterday. Compare w/ totals from Transsect 5, which cut across Grids 2 & 3.
