-2- However, I am not as much of a territorialist as were some of my predecessors or even some of my contemporaries. And although I can assure you that the activities and people of the Gray Herbarium stand the test, I do not choose to speak of it alone. The whole history of botany at Harvard is far more interesting than any one of its segments. I wish I had time to deal at my disposal here to develop this theme properly but I'm afraid I shall only be able to give the highlights. Robinson wrote a history of botany at Harvard for Morrison's, The Development of Harvard University (since the inauguration of president Elot 1869-1929) and Naturally, I must draw on Robinson's account for the years preceding my own familiarity with the scene.
