Maker 1959 Journal June 1 Barrow Alaska Nothing accomplished this day. Went out in the afternoon with John O'Sullivan to some hole he has drilled in Fresh Lake. Descended one hole, 25" diameter, 20' deep. Through 5 feet of lake ice + 15 feet of sediments. A fabulous cross section—especially the section thin ice—active layer—permafrost. Large ice lenses in frozen active layer— none in permafrost. Upper inch of active layer brown (oxidized) remains, gray (reduced) except at permafrost boundary when there was some oxidation. June 2 Barrow, Alaska. Got wiring & slate. Finally ready to go to Peters Lake. Wrote letters. An afternoon was on tap for trip to Unmat m Coons. Didn't get off. Did get a start on movie camera set up. Got wire & clamps + set up light to see how long it will run off a 6 volt battery. Gave drawings for light housing to Father. Another wrest day. June 3 Barrow, Alaska Paul informed me early in the morning
