June 1 Barrow Alaska
Nothing accomplished this day. Went
out in the afternoon with John O'Sullivan
to some hole he has drilled in Fresh
Lake. Descended one hole, 25" diameter,
20' deep. Through 5 feet of lake ice +
15 feet of sediments. A fabulous cross
section—especially the section thin
ice—active layer—permafrost. Large
ice lenses in frozen active layer—
none in permafrost. Upper inch of
active layer brown (oxidized)
remains, gray (reduced) except at
permafrost boundary when there was
some oxidation.
June 2 Barrow, Alaska.
Got wiring & slate. Finally ready
to go to Peters Lake. Wrote letters.
An afternoon was on tap for trip to
Unmat m Coons. Didn't get off.
Did get a start on movie camera set
up. Got wire & clamps + set up light
to see how long it will run off
a 6 volt battery. Gave drawings for
light housing to Father. Another
wrest day.
