Ursus horribilis
July 21 Pitmegea Pine, Alaska
Saw a grizzly bear today down toward the
beach. He was walking down Flint Ridge when
first seen passed out of sight then was
seen crossing the long ridge west of
that one. Fresh tracks along beach indicate
that he had traveled along the beach to the
edge of the delta, suspect the cabin & on
up to ridge. Older tracks in mud indicate that
he was out or about a few days ago.
Have seen 4 other bears this year, all in
June until the one. Two on Bear Mt.
on 2 successive days—one mentioned in
journal. Two on Wolverine Ridge (beyond
Willow Creek) on day Hank Childs came in.
July 29 Saw 2 at about 10 PM today. Along
Willow Creek near river. They headed up
creek, one presumably in or along stream,
it was out of sight from where I was up
on bluff behind tent. The other went up
along ridge this side of creek but soon
disappeared, presumably he crossed ridge
creek side.
