Maker 1959 Plectrophenax nivalis June 13 Pintzeger - 1 pair on Ridge II - west of camp, June 14 (At least 3 pairs on far ridge (also called Ridge III & Beer ridge) June 17 Several 8" bunting were fluttering about the cliff just below bar on which tent is situated. This would be a good nest site probably they nest here. June 20 8" singing from bluff downstream from camp during afternoon. Seen them again at 7 this evening. June 23 Nest with 5 young - dark grey down no pin feathers, 2-3 days old. Under rock slab on Ridge II - west side. Nest reached by a small opening perhaps 3 meters square + passage 16-18 miles long to tiny chamber just nest size. 8" Bunting chased a female Longspur who was foraging within 50 feet of nest. Saw her later chase a 8" Longspur & later still the female again. The Longspurs were foraging along the ridge all day. Fifty feet radius seemed to be the female's territorial range because beyond this she paid them no heed. Did not see male chase them at all. June 24 At nest on Ridge II. Noted several other cheers of Longspurs by Snow Buntings. When I put up camera tripod, 8" landed 20 feet from nest
