Maley 1959 Journal of ptarmigan tracks fairly fresh, x snow-hunting tracks about tiny exposed spots. May 15 Barrow, Alaska Morning frittered around getting some equipment, talking etc. In afternoon went out with the D & caterpillar tractor, Joe agriek driving. We cleared 3 swaths in central marsh - each about 1/4 mile long. Result. - one lemming runway in use, one nest, & one possible nest. Vegetation is intact - no sign of lemming numbers I'm afraid. May 16 Barrow, Alaska Tom Cadet & I made a wearl trip to the Snare River via the coal mine cast trail. Left at 9:30 A.M. - reached river at noon. Distance traveled 30.8 miles from the village. Trail was in good shape. Snow shows little sign of melting - even ridge & polygons have a thin cover thin which grass & flower stems protrude. We saw almost nothing. One male ptarmigan at 16 miles from village. That was at midday we reached
