Pt. Barrow, Alaska September 1 Banding on grid. Intermittent sunshine periods revealed on grid chironomid adults few in number about small grass-filled tundra pools & appeared to be some black + yellow sp taken on August 27. An early morning trip out to ridge 2 mi SE showed a couple of small longspurs present (about 7 or 8 birds a floor). September 2 Banding on grid over cast snow flurries this AM. On trip out to ridge this AM saw 2 floors of about 15 birds each and while checking snap traps a few (3-5) were observed. September 3 Banding on grid - also Sampling day spent afternoon out on ridge. This AM the small tundra ponds had a thin 1/6" of ice + much of ground frozen - both thawed by end of day. In general weather cold but quite pleasant with very little wind. No surface insects present on ridge. Saw 3 longspurs on trip out to ridge this AM and more this afternoon. Set five lemming traps + additional Diet traps. The tundra is now well into its autumn color - red colored arctic willow, very emaspicium and grasses fast becoming brownish. Even so many plants still flowering as S. cernua, S. bucculatus, Cardamine.
