Hard 1952 At Barrow, Alaska august 28 Red Phalarope juvenals conspicuous in most bodies of water over the ponds behind ARK and out in the marshes, lagoon, & ocean. Those in the tundra pools are to be seen whirligiging for food? august 29 Banding a gull august 30 Spent afternoon field setting Decroctomyia mud traps along ridge, collecting juvenile Phalaropes, 1 jun. jaeger and Buntings. The latter at Nirwuke. August 31 overcast most of day, but during afternoon clouds broke up somewhat and sun shone for periods up to 1/2 hr. Spent afternoon at a plot on ridge - scarcely any wind. temperature apparently dropped toward 5 as air acquired a nip. Insect activity, in adult stages practically nil- 1 Tabanid fly found along old beach line in willow assemblage a few chneumonids were taken in ant situations but lower than any previous visit. Spiders present but not high, probably about 1 per sq. meter. 1 al midge (Speniotoma- like) was found on ridge, a ? Most of the mushrooms present are with various Laval instan of Scleroids + Mycetophoroids. Long term activity much reduced over last visit (aug 28) probably 20 birds seen in 4 hrs
