Pt. Barrow, Alaska Hard 195- august 21 Of midges (Sphenopoma-like) were observed behind ARL. August 22 clear but becoming overcast. Surface plots on ridge remained unchanged from last visit - i.e. nothing on a per meter basis found. Along willow ridge, a few ichneumonids present as well as 3 or 4 mycetophilids found. On surfaces of some pools & on the surface of ground Collembola can be observed but not in any great number. An occasional mite was observed. [illegible] No Bombus observed at all. Saw only 3 longspurs at afternoon August 23 Banding in grid - weather turned very cold + overcast with a few sleety periods in morning - also rain. Had to climb traps enroute if this coupled with high winds. Towards late evening overcast began to break up & it got cold. - Gravel around buildings froze and certain ponds behind ARL were frozen with their sheet of ice by midnight. August 24 Rest trips behind ARL many ponds with thin sheets of ice on them and ground frozen somewhat at surface in bare areas. Although a stiff +6-10 mph wind blowing the sky is clearing off
