Pt. Barrow Alaska august 4 Clear with cold east wind. out a ridge. Very similar to last visit (august 1st) as far as species composition & relative quantitative picture of fauna. Schneumonoids appearing in increasingly larger number, particularly the vestigial winged one which was taken in Petasitis regions of high polygons, their greasy interstices and along old beach lines in willow areas. Greatest diversity of the schneumonoids was in the willow areas. About the blossoms of the Papaver are many Muscoild flies & these are the principal pollinators of the poppy although some other fly groups as Borborids (1 or 2 seen all afternoon); churmonids (perhaps 1 per 20 flowers) and Mycetophilids 1 per 100 flowers were observed. a male Bombus was taken from a staminate flower of Petasitis, 2 others seen in flight. 1 vestigial-winged Tupulid observed in willow area - no when else seen. About the mushrooms was a small Sciurid? also some of the larger Sciurids (?) were taken from old burning burns by blowing cigarette smoke into then & the flies coming out. a few (5) Saldids were in evidence along the old beach line. Mosquitoes were at very low level even
