July 29.
the arctophile - midges were not in evidence and
could not be located even in the axils of the grass.
On the plot area much of the Petasites is well
past full bloom - many have already delivred
The Petasites between the polygons is not
beginning to bloom.
July 30 around ARLs trap guild weather noticeably
warmer - sun came out for several hours this
afternoon - midges flying about in large
numbers up to 50 per Cubic meter of air
at any given glance. Mosquitoes in
evidence but not encountered in numbers
over 3 or 4 at any one time. Midge swarms
found in afternoon + early evening.
July 31 This am, the midges behind ARL in
evidence already sizeable swarms
had formed - many resting on the ground
+ vegetation also. a few mosquitoes
were about. - Sun shining through the
clouds occasionally obscured behind larger
Cloud masses; this continued until late
afternoon + evening. Out in the marsh there
were a very large number of mosquitoes
+ very pestiferous - still no indication of
where breeding. As soon as wind would blow
and sun descend they drop off very
rapidly - also digs in Temperate had this Nest
